PremiAir engineer Romy Mayer set for track return
Mayer went on maternity leave at the start of the year
She led James Golding to seventh in points last year
PremiAir Racing is set for a boost to its engineering stocks, with the impending trackside return of Romy Mayer.
Mayer recently returned to workshop duties with the Gold Coast-based squad after she went on maternity leave at the start of the year.
Before going on leave, Mayer was a standout engineer in 2024, leading James Golding to PremiAir’s first pole position and podium.
Simon Hodge has had the reins of Golding’s #31 PremiAir Chevrolet since Round 1, with Golding — who recently announced his exit — currently 16th in points. Andrew Gilliam, meanwhile, has overseen Richie Stanaway for the bulk of the season, after taking over from Ludo Lacroix, the team’s competition director.
Mayer, formerly of Triple Eight, returned to the workshop three days a week in August, with PremiAir yet to confirm when she will return to trackside duties.
However, she has been preparing by providing support to the team ahead of the upcoming Repco Bathurst 1000, and has returned to her mentor role by leading a workshop for St Hilda’s School students Grace Fong and Tiffany Ferguson.

"I have been extensively engaged in back-end work with our simulation software and engineering and strategy tools, providing support to the engineering team as we entering the endurance rounds. There is considerably more involved compared to the sprint rounds,” Mayer said.
"With the school holidays underway, we are delighted to welcome the students from St. Hilda’s. It is a particularly fitting week for their visit, as it marks our final preparation week at Bathurst.
"This gives them an excellent opportunity to observe not only the process of getting the cars ready but also to gain insight into all the behind-the-scenes work, including our equipment and systems that are not visible on television.
“They will witness first-hand the work of the mechanics, as well as the crucial role the engineers play in preparing us for a week of intense racing at Bathurst.
"They will follow me through various aspects of our operation — examining the engineering processes, our office workflow, data analysis, simulations, calibration on the cars, se-tup procedures, and the comprehensive checklists we use to ensure everything is in order before the race cars hit the road on Friday.”
PremiAir’s home event on the Gold Coast follows Bathurst, before events at Sandown and Adelaide round out the season.
