Broc Feeney enters Sandown Semi Final 84 points above cut line
Reigning champion Will Brown first of three drivers on outside looking in
Chaz Mostert, Matt Payne, Cam Waters hold provisional Adelaide spots
It's a tale of two halves for Triple Eight Race Engineering, Penrite Racing and Tickford Racing, as drivers look to make the bp Adelaide Grand Final at Sandown.
The first ever Repco Supercars Finals Series round at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 was headlined by a clean sweep for Chaz Mostert, and the elimination of Anton De Pasquale, Ryan Wood and Brodie Kostecki.
Wood's elimination leaves Mostert as Walkinshaw Andretti United's only representative for the Semi Final, while both drivers from Triple Eight, Penrite Racing and Tickford Racing progressed.
Kai Allen and Thomas Randle both raced into the Semi Final from below the cut line, with Kostecki and De Pasquale falling out. Wood, meanwhile, began the weekend in ninth.
Broc Feeney, Matt Payne and Cam Waters are their teams' respective highest placed drivers, with Mostert jumping from sixth to second courtesy of his sweep. If any of the top three leave Saturday more than 150 points clear of fifth, they will mathematically clinch a Grand Final spot. Needing a 67-point gain on fifth, Feeney is obviously most likely, compared to Mostert (97), Payne (121) and Waters (139).
Reigning Supercars champion Will Brown is now the highest profile driver on the outside looking in, with the 2024 Penrite Oil Sandown 500 winner 12 points behind Waters.
Should Brown be eliminated at Sandown, the last two Supercars champions will not fight for the title in Adelaide.
Given the events of the Gold Coast, where Kostecki effectively crashed out of contention, De Pasquale missed out due to a brace of penalties, and Wood's mechanical woes on Saturday, it's not inconceivable that any of Brown, Allen and Randle could surge into the top four.
Randle and Allen were nine and 27 points behind respectively heading into the Gold Coast, and emerged 72 and 32 points clear after Sunday's race. For what it's worth, the Ford duo collided on Sunday.
Let's not forget, the 'win and you're in' rule will see any of these Finals Drivers sail into Adelaide. Should one of them emulate Mostert's Gold Coast heroics and win both races, it will come down to points for the other three.
The Repco Supercars Finals Series resumes at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 on November 14-16. Tickets for the Semi Final are on sale now.
