Chaz Mostert survives hair-raising scare at Turn 8 in final practice
WAU star lucky to get away without major damage
Mostert one of four drivers in Grand Final contention
Chaz Mostert was lucky to get away with a high-speed scare at the notorious Turn 8 during final practice at the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Mostert was topping the timesheets halfway through the session in the #25 Mobil 1 Optus Mustang, and had just bolted on a fresh set of tyres when the incident occurred.
Entering Turn 8, the most unforgiving corner on the circuit, Mostert clipped the inside Armco barrier, which then sent him ricocheting into the outside concrete.
However, unlike the scenes of Friday qualifying last year, Mostert only made relatively light contact with his left rear corner, and was able to limp back into pit lane.
Walkinshaw Andretti United were even able to repair the car and send it back out for a systems check ahead of Boost Mobile Qualifying this afternoon.
Reflecting on the incident, Mostert admitted that grip and cooler track temperatures caught him out: "The car hooked up a little bit too good for me there.
"I didn't expect to go on my first flyer, I've been struggling a little bit with the balance at Turn 8, but that tyre really livened it up a bit.
"I'd rather get my little scrape with the wall done nice and early in the weekend, but I'm just glad that I saved it a little bit.
"I obviously hurt the car a bit, but it could've been a lot worse.
"Get it over with nice and early in the weekend, but the positive thing is the car felt really nice, so we'll get it fixed and get it back out there."
After returning from his brief systems check, Mostert reported that there were no major issues with the #25 Mustang, though minor repairs were still required to the left front corner.
"We still need to tune the setup a little bit. They didn't get a chance to look at the left front," he said post-session.
"But we got back out, went through the demons of Turn 8 again, and important to get back out there before qualy."
Boost Mobile Qualifying for Race 32 begins at 12:40pm local time/1:10pm AEDT.
