Broc Feeney missed out on Sydney victory after stunning drag race
Feeney sent into a spin by eventual winner Cam Waters before finish
Waters side-drafted Feeney to deny Triple Eight driver by 0.03s
Broc Feeney has claimed the manic finish to Race 2 at the Thrifty Sydney 500 - Opening Round is evidence drivers will be "allowed to obviously race a little bit harder" in 2025.
With four laps remaining, Feeney was sent into a spin by eventual race winner Cam Waters, who attempted a redress following the collision.
Feeney eventually got past as Triple Eight Race Engineering teammate Will Brown caught up, before Tickford Racing driver Waters defeated Feeney in a remarkable drag race to the line.
Before the dramatic finish, officials investigated the Turn 4 collision. Officials opted not to penalise Waters for the contact with Feeney or the redress, letting the drivers fight it out on track.
Waters also avoided penalty over the final-corner contact that set up the drag race.
When asked about the incidents after the race, Feeney said: "It was pretty hard racing out there, obviously I got turned with about five or so laps to go.
"Will got caught up in the middle of it, and sort of all three of us were racing. I was obviously struggling there at the end, and got the rear bar in the last corner.
"I think Cam tried to redress a little bit, but he was able to slipstream past me there at the end, nothing I could obviously do down the straight there."
Waters made contact with Feeney at the final corner, with the former maximising a side draft to steal victory at the line in front of a raucous grandstand at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The defeat compounded an already dramatic weekend for Feeney, who lost a potential podium on Friday night due to a puncture.
"He obviously tried to readdress with me, and sort of took Will along with him along the way, then I was obviously able to get back to the lead and regain my position," Feeney added.
"My tyres were a little bit hot after going backwards, but we were obviously racing real hard at the end, and copped a bit of a hit at the last corner.
"As I said, I think he tried to readdress, but then was able to slipstream back up past me.
"We're allowed to obviously race a little bit harder this year by the looks of it, so I look forward to it."
Supercars will return to the track on Sunday at 11:10am AEDT for Boost Mobile Qualifying, followed by the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at 1:05pm.
The 200km Race 3 will commence at 4:05pm.
