The session was red-flagged with four minutes remaining after Aaron Seton fell foul of the wet Turn 2 grass.

Prior to the stoppage, Payne demoted Everingham, who spent Friday in hospital.

Everingham missed both Friday practice sessions, but was immediately on the pace on Saturday.

The Dubbo driver’s 1:33.116s was beaten by Payne’s 1:32.670s, although Everingham lowered his own marker to a 1:32.884s.

Seton bowled a wide at Turn 2 and was unable to return to the circuit under his own steam.

The third-generation driver was fourth at the time of his error. He managed to qualify ninth.

Cars returned to the circuit for a final run with just three minutes remaining.

That included Seton, who under the new red flag rule, lost his fastest time but returned to the session.

Best went purple in the first sector, but lost time towards the end of his lap.

No driver was able to unseat Payne, who secured his first Super2 pole.

Brad Vaughan claimed Super3 pole honours, and was good enough to set a time for 11th overall.

Jaylyn Robotham, Cameron Hill, Matt McLean, Matt Chahda, Seton and Nash Morris rounded out the top 10.

Cars will return to the track for Race 1 on Saturday at 5:50pm AEDT. CLICK HERE to view the race schedule.
