Cody Gillis will not start final race of 2025 Super2 season
BJR driver involved in major accident at Turn 8 in Race 1
Teammate Brad Vaughan set to start from pole in final race
Cody Gillis has been ruled out of the final race of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series at the bp Adelaide Grand Final following a monster hit at the notorious Turn 8 sweeper in Race 1 earlier today.
The second year Brad Jones Racing driver was running 12th on Lap 5, having been muscled out of the top 10 the lap before in a heated battle with Eggleston Motorsport's Jordyn Sinni.
As he attempted to get back into a rhythm, the Wollongong driver was tucked in behind Cody Burcher entering Turn 8, when he clipped the inside armco barrier.
The #9 Commodore was then flung into the outside wall, with Gillis making enormous contact with the concrete, destroying the left side of the car and forcing the likes of Campbell Logan and Jarrod Hughes into evasive action.
Per a BJR release: "A heavy crash at Turn 8 has brought Cody Gillis’ weekend to an early end.
"Thankfully, the #9 Perry’s Fuel Distributors ZB Commodore driver is okay, however his car has sustained too much damage and will not return on track tomorrow following assessment from the team."
Gillis himself spoke on a BJR social media video: "A pretty rough end to the weekend, we're finishing a day early here in Adelaide. A bit of a rough end to the year as well given this is the last round.
"I just clipped the inside wall going through [Turn] 8 and I had a pretty big shunt. Physically I'm alright, mentally I'm still struggling a little bit.
"The car is pretty toast, so we're not heading out on track tomorrow.
"A big sorry to the BJR crew, I know everyone would've loved to have finished off on a high tomorrow."
In more positive news for the team, the sister car of local South Aussie Brad Vaughan is set to start tomorrow's race from pole position, with the Race 2 grid set by combined practice times after a weather-induced abandonment of qualifying.
The final race of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series will begin tomorrow at 1:50pm local time/2:20pm AEDT. Tickford's Rylan Gray secured the title in the opening race of the weekend.
