Motorsport heavyweight and new V8 Supercars team boss Roger Penske has been inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit.
The 78-year old founder and President of the Penske Corporation is an automotive and business icon, his motorsport dominance netting 23 national US Championships, including 12 in Indy Car racing, and an incredible 15 Indianapolis 500 victories.
The Hall of Fame acknowledges those whose "automotive innovations changed the world and revolutionised our way of life" and Penske was honoured to be included this year along with Elwood Haynes, co-founder of Haynes-Apperson Automobile Co, former Ferrari S.p.A. chairman Luca di Montezemolo, and Ratan Tata, founder of Tata Sons.
"It's a real honor to be part of this illustrious group that has been elected into the Hall of Fame," Penske told the Detroit News. "From a business perspective, I've been very fortunate to have a team of people who have supported me."
Penske has spent time in the V8 Supercars paddock on a number of occasions this year, after merging with Dick Johnson Racing's existing team to field one entry in the 2015 Championship.
While there was a slight bump in the road early this season when returning two-time champ Marcos Ambrose elected to step down from driving full-time, with Scott Pye behind the wheel the team has recorded top 10 finishes across the last three events.
DJR Team Penske managing director Ryan Story was pleased to see Penske recognised and offered his sincere congratulations.
"His contribution to the world of motorsport is almost without peer," Story said of Penske.
"He's had success in every arena in which he has competed and certainly the opportunity to be working with him this year with DJR Team Penske is something we are absolutely humbled by.
"When he joins us at the race meetings, his presence, his experience - he's an incredibly successful and accomplished businessman who happens to be a hard-core racer. Truly deserving."
