2025 Dunlop Super2 Series field to feature strong representation from main game teams

The 25th anniversary season of the Dunlop Super2 Series is set to see a strong grid of the hottest young talent from Australia and New Zealand take to the track as they aim to break their way into the Repco Supercars Championship.

The 2024 season was one of the most thrilling championship battles in series history, as Zach Bates fended off Aaron Cameron and Kai Allen in a last race shootout on the streets of Adelaide.

However, it is all change for season 2025, with Bates the only one of the trio to remain on the Super2 grid for 2025.

There is also an influx of rookies arriving into the championship this year, a powerhouse main game operation returning, and several teams expanding, with the grid set to well exceed 20 for the season opener in Sydney.

What we know so far

The big news over the off-season was Zach Bates' departure from Walkinshaw Andretti United after snapping their 15-year drought of championship success with Super2 title win.

Bates' big main game break through long-time backer Will Brown and Triple Eight's wildcard program also came with a seat at Eggleston Motorsport, as the Canberran looks to become the first back-to-back Super2 champion.

Bates joins incumbent Jordyn Sinni, reigning Super3 champion Cody Burcher, Toyota GR Cup standout Bradi Owen, and sophomore driver Elliott Cleary, who moves from Brad Jones Racing in an expanded five car effort.

Walkinshaw Andretti United have looked from within to fill the shoes of Bates, incumbent Campbell Logan to be joined by WAU's GR Cup ace from the past two years Matt Hillyer.

The big in for the 2025 season is Triple Eight Race Engineering, who return to the series for the first time since 2013 with Carrera Cup star Jackson Walls, and another GR Cup graduate in Ben Gomersall.

Fellow main game outfit Tickford Racing returns with it's Autosport outfit, with Lochie Dalton and Rylan Gray both continuing on for a second season with the team.

Reuben Goodall replaces Brad Vaughan in the #5 Mustang, whilst Nash Morris makes a welcome return in a new fourth Mustang, with backing from the team he ran with in Carrera Cup last season, Scott Taylor Motorsport.

Erebus Academy have also expanded in conjunction with Image Racing, with Jobe Stewart and 2024 rookie of the year Jarrod Hughes to be joined by 2024 GR Cup champion Max Geoghegan.

Anderson Motorsport are the only other team to have confirmed their plans in another expansion effort, Kiwi Porsche and speedway youngster Ayrton Hodson joining yet another GR Cup graduate in Ryan Tomsett.

Rumoured moves

There are at least three more teams that are expected to be on the grid in the 2025 Dunlop Series, though their details have not yet been made official.

A big off-season driver move that has reportedly been made by Brad Jones Racing, who are rumoured to have secured the services of qualifying ace Brad Vaughan for 2025.

The former Tickford Autosport driver, who also made his Repco Bathurst 1000 debut last year alongside Matt Chahda, will likely partner incumbent BJR driver Cody Gillis.

Matt Chahda Motorsport are rumoured to be making a big expansion from one to three cars for this season, as they add two Mustangs to their ex-BJR Commodore.

Jackson Rice is expected to embark on his first full-time season with the team, having made his debut with the team filling in for Matt Chahda at the Bathurst 1000 Super2 round last year.

Teenager Blake Tracey has done several test days with the team and is also expected to be with the team full-time in the Commodore.

James Masterton is also expected to return to the series, with MCM reported to have done a deal to run his Mustang, however Chahda himself could be in line to come out of Super2 retirement to start the season in Sydney.

After nearly claiming the drivers and teams titles in a remarkable return to competition, Kelly Racing are also set to return with Mason Kelly, and a second driver who is not yet clear.

Who is yet to find a seat?

McLeod Bathurst 2024

Of the regular competitors in last year's Dunlop Series, three names stand out as not being confirmed or likely entries for the 2025 season as of time of publication.

With PremiAir Racing shifting attention to Supercars operations, including a potential wildcard program, Cameron McLeod will be with a new team for his expected return to the development series.

2024 championship runner-up and Mike Kable Young Gun Award winner Aaron Cameron is unlikely to go one better this season, as he is not expected to return to Kelly Racing.

The Victorian has announced an international start to his 2025 racing programme, with a campaign in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship.

Max Vidau is another name not expected to appear on the grid this season, having just missed out on rookie of the year honours to Hughes last year.
