Lochie Dalton breaks Super2 qualifying lap record at Bathurst
23-year-old secured 2025 Boost Mobile Pole Award with fourth pole of the season
Rylan Gray to share the front row for second straight day
Lochie Dalton has broken the Super2 qualifying lap record at Mount Panorama, and secured a clean sweep both Boost Mobile Pole Awards for Round 5 at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
In doing so, the 23-year-old Tasmanian also secured the 2025 Boost Mobile Pole Award, claiming his fourth pole of the season. With two sessions left for the season in Adelaide, and no one else having secured multiple poles this season, Dalton holds an unassailable lead.
Dalton flew to a 2:04.6098, a tenth faster than Aaron Cameron's former record from the corresponding session last year, and three tenths of a second faster than teammate Rylan Gray, who will once again share the front row of the grid.
"I had a lot of confidence on that new tyre, I was actually a little bit disappointed in the lap, I had a low four on the dash, but just got too confident in the last corner," said Dalton.
"The car was an absolute rocket ship, it was so beautiful to drive, it just stuck and did whatever I wanted to do.
"Credit to Bayden Charlton my engineer and all of Tickford, they've given me an amazing car."
There wasn't a cloud in the sky as the field rolled out onto Mount Panorama this morning, with ambient temperatures sitting at 16 degrees, it was set to be a fast session.
It was Gray who turned the tables on his teammate Dalton on the first lap, setting a 2:06.4235, before the wick was turned up on the second lap as he set a 2:05.6579, a tenth under his Friday qualifying time.
It was Mustangs first through sixth after the opening run, with Gray leading Dalton, Cameron McLeod, Nash Morris, Jonathon Webb, and Reuben Goodall.
However, McLeod would be on a used tyre for his final run, having used up his green tyres in yesterday's back-to-back qualifying and Top Five Shootout sessions.
Goodall was involved in a bizarre pit lane incident when he backed into the pit wall as he prepared to go out for his final run, damaging the rear wing of the #5 Mustang, and delaying his final run.
Jobe Stewart broke up the Ford stranglehold, jumping to second on the opening lap of his second run. just 0.038s off Gray, whilst Brad Vaughan leapt up to fifth.
McLeod ran long at Hell Corner and killed the engine, though was able to re-fire and keep going, but was shuffled down to 11th by session's end.
Morris was only 0.0706s away from a front row start with a strong final run, whilst Vaughan would find his way onto the second row of the grid with a 2:05.3848, claiming top Holden honours for Brad Jones Racing.
Goodall's wing was repaired with enough time to spare for one flying lap, which was good enough to place him in fifth, ahead of Bailey Sweeny, Stewart, Zach Bates, Campbell Logan, and Cody Burcher
The penultimate round of the Dunlop Super2 Series concludes with Race 2 at 4:05pm local time.
