Victorian local Jenkins has more than 35 years as a Race Official
Volunteering "brings people together like a family," says Jenkins
The Penrite Oil Sandown 500 is more than a race. It is a showcase of precision, teamwork, and the passion that drives motorsport forward.
Leading the charge at this year’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500 is Victoria’s own Anthony Jenkins, serving as Clerk of the Course.
With more than 35 years as a Race Official, Tony’s experience and leadership have shaped countless race weekends and continue to inspire volunteers within the Coates Supercars Volunteers Program to aim higher with their goals.
The Clerk of the Course is one of the most senior and trusted officials at any motorsport event. This role carries responsibility for the entire competition, from ensuring safety for everyone on site to overseeing compliance with regulations.
Working closely with the Race Director and Stewards, the Clerk of the Course coordinates race control, manages officials, and ensures that every element of the event runs smoothly. It is a position that demands knowledge, decisiveness, and the ability to lead a team under pressure.
With more than three decades of service, Tony has officiated at events ranging from grassroots club meetings to major international competitions across Australia and Thailand.
His Supercars involvement spans over 30 years, where he has taken on senior roles such as Clerk of the Course, Deputy and Assistant Clerk of the Course, Course Car Manager, and Emergency Coordinator.
Today, he continues to lead at the highest level as Motorsport Australia’s appointed Race Director for Ferrari Challenge Australasia, reflecting his unmatched expertise and reputation.
This wealth of experience demonstrates the opportunities available to those who commit to officiating. Tony’s calm authority and dedication to mentoring have helped build strong, cohesive teams at Sandown and beyond, year after year. For him, the greatest reward is fostering collaboration and creating an environment where officials can perform at their best.
“As Clerk of the Course, I’ve seen how the spirit of volunteering brings people together like a family," Jenkins said.
"The dedication and teamwork of our volunteers make these events possible, and every year I’m inspired by the commitment of those who return and the enthusiasm of those just starting out.
"My advice is simple for anyone wanting to get involved: try different things early, find your niche and seek out someone to mentor you; there is a role for everyone."
The Sandown 500 continues to attract a diverse team of volunteers, from long serving officials to enthusiastic newcomers eager to contribute. This blend of experience and fresh energy is what makes the Coates Supercars Volunteers Program so successful.
Sam Borthwick, Major Projects Manager – Events, Coates, added: “Motorsport relies on the passion, dedication and expertise of volunteers, who help deliver a safe, fun and unforgettable Supercars experience for fans.
"Coates is proud to support the volunteers who help bring the race weekend to life through the Coates Supercars Volunteers Program. Their enthusiasm and commitment is inspiring, and it’s fantastic to see such strong community spirit here in Victoria.”
