The Erebus Motorsport Supercar which is now under a cloud for the 2022 Repco Bathurst 1000 has quite the history.
EMH02 was heavily damaged at Pukekohe with Will Brown at the wheel, following contact with Mark Winterbottom in Race 28 of the Repco Supercars Championship on Sunday.
Erebus CEO Barry Ryan was immediately sceptical of being able to get the car ready to go in time for opening practice at Bathurst on October 6.
Should that prove true, Brown will switch into EMH04 – ironically the car he crashed at the Mount Panorama 500 last year – which had been set aside for Greg Murphy and Richie Stanaway’s wildcard.
Erebus is due to make a call on EMH02 as soon as this afternoon, once it has unloaded its Pukekohe cargo.
Built as a ZB Commodore for the 2018 season, it has chalked up 120 main game starts for a return of four wins and a further 16 podiums.
David Reynolds drove the car to the podium at its maiden event, the 2018 Adelaide 500, before winning a race three weeks later at Albert Park.
The Reynolds/EMH02 combination also tasted victory that season at Darwin and Newcastle but its most notable outing came between those events at the Bathurst 1000.
Reynolds and Luke Youlden looked set to back up their 2017 triumph, controlling the race after starting from pole position.
However, cramps infamously set in to rob Reynolds late in the piece, opening the door for Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards to add to their Peter Brock Trophy tallies.
EMH02 remained at the pointy end of the field throughout 2019 before being parked for a full season.
It roared back into action following the aforementioned demise of EMH04, Brown having raced it ever since.
Last year, EMH02 powered Brown to his maiden Supercars Championship race win, and then took provisional pole for Bathurst.
Brown’s teammate Brodie Kostecki drives EMH03, while EMH01 – the car in which Reynolds/Youlden did conquer Bathurst – was decommissioned following Anton De Pasquale’s 2019 Great Race crash.
