Mark Winterbottom felt "like a little kid" in broadcast role
2015 Supercars champion featured on Perth Super 440 broadcast
Winterbottom reported from pit lane, offered expert opinion
Being able to go behind the scenes and ask former rivals and bosses questions had Mark Winterbottom feeling “like a little kid” in his Supercars broadcast cameo.
The 2015 Supercars champion featured on last weekend's Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440 broadcast in a special comments role.
Winterbottom jumped into the deep end in pit lane as the action unfolded, talking to long-time rivals, drivers and team members.
The 2013 Bathurst winner also offered expert opinions on the weekend, including his take on the controversial collision between James Golding and Ryan Wood on Sunday as the drivers confronted each other in real-time.
The cameo also pitted Winterbottom alongside former rivals Mark Skaife and Garth Tander on the panel, bringing the champions turned broadcasters full circle.
Winterbottom’s cameo was well received by fans online, with the 39-time race winner saying he was grateful for the messages and feedback in a social media post.
“I really enjoyed being involved,” Winterbottom told broadcast colleague Chad Neylon on Supercars’ Cool Down Lap podcast.
“Thank you to you and everyone at the team for looking after me. I was like a little kid. I'm asking lots of questions.
“New appreciation for the whole commentary side for what you and the team do. Everyone should put themselves in someone else's shoes for a day.
“I didn't know how much went into the commentary side to make our sport sound good. So, new appreciation and loved it.”
Winterbottom will race alongside Tickford Racing star Cam Waters in the Enduro Cup events at The Bend and Bathurst later this year.
