  • Erebus Motorsport attempted bold three stop strategy in Townsville

  • Jack Le Brocq crawled across the line in 20th, Cooper Murray 22nd

  • Le Brocq reset race lap record in stunning charge before running dry

A pragmatic Barry Ryan is seeing the positives in a fast yet unrewarded day for Erebus Motorsport, with both cars running short of fuel in the Townsville finale.

Cooper Murray and Jack Le Brocq started 15th and 22nd on Sunday, and Erebus chased a result with a bold three stop strategy plan.

Such was the speed of both cars, that Le Brocq and Murray both ran short of fuel in the closing stages. Le Brocq not only set the fastest lap of the race, but reset the Gen3 lap record at Reid Park.

Le Brocq started the final lap 17th but crawled across the line in 20th, with Murray 22nd.

"We qualified bad, had a fast car, got the lap record, which is good," Ryan said on the broadcast.

"We just messed it up. We didn't do a good job enough job in the pits, including me with the fuel.

"Our pit stops doing a little bit of work. We got a couple good, but the others weren't real good. To do a three stop, you've got to have a perfect race.

"We gave it a go and we made up positions on where we started. That's all you can do, really."

Ryan, who is engineering Le Brocq, continued: "We just just misjudged it... we planned it, and then he went so fast and burned more fuel than what we expected, and I just miscalculated it.

"My old brain's not as sharp as some of these young blokes. So I'll learn... we'll be right. We'll bounce back."

On Le Brocq's stunning speed, Ryan added: "It was good fun. Jack had the ball because he could drive as fast as he wanted to drive and he had no traffic. It was good to see.

"We tested the car out and he said the car was the best it's been all weekend. So that's the thing that's a shame, because if we qualified like we did yesterday, we would've had a speedy race."

Le Brocq is 143 points from the top 10 heading to Queensland Raceway on August 8-10. Tickets are on sale now.
