Will Brown caught in heated last lap battle with Cam Waters
Brown caught out by track conditions, Waters' defence
2024 champion finished eighth, remains outside Finals bubble
Will Brown has admitted he was lucky to get away with a hair-raising moment on the final lap of a shortened opening race of the Melbourne SuperSprint.
Brown was sitting in seventh starting the final lap of Race 4, as Chaz Mostert worked to keep a rampant Cam Waters at bay.
Waters had been trying to get by the #1 Toyota for several laps, however had one attempt too many at Turn 3, allowing the #888 Ford to get a run out of Turn 4.
Brown jinked to the inside entering Turn 5, however the Monster Mustang firmly closed the door, whilst the Red Bull Ampol Ford got out of shape off-line in the marbles.
That forced Brown to bail out and surf over the inside kerb, with Mostert's teammate Ryan Wood then capitalising and moving up to seventh.
However, as Jayden Ojeda proved in Practice 2 earlier today, the results had the pair made contact could've been far worse.
Brown was able to pick up a couple of places in the standings, now sitting 13th, but remains 19 points below the Finals cut-off line, with a familiar story haunting him.
Once again, the 2024 champion was left to fight through the field after a sub-par qualifying performance, starting the race from 11th, promoted one position due to a penalty for Cooper Murray.
"He was trying to get Chaz, and I was sort of trying to capitalise on them getting held up by each other," Brown told Supercars.com post-race.
"I went to look up the inside of Turn 5, but it was so dirty on the road that I nearly accidentally tipped us both in.
"I was glad to get away with that, but unfortunately lost a spot to Woody, but we live to fight another day. I had a fast race car, just got to do a better job in qualy."
Brown is set to start out of 10th for Race 5 tomorrow afternoon at 5:30pm local time.
