Walkinshaw TWG makes Chaz Mostert chassis call
Mostert moved into spare chassis after Bathurst 1000 crash
Spare chassis converted from Ford to Toyota specification
Chaz Mostert has been moved into a spare Toyota chassis for the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, following his heavy Repco Bathurst 1000 crash.
Mostert crashed his #1 Mobil 1 Optus Supra heavily on lap 156 of Sunday's Great Race at Forrest's Elbow, wiping the two-time Bathurst winner out on the spot.
The reigning Supercars champion triggered the only Shannons Safety Car of the race, which led to a thrilling climax that culminated in victory for Brodie Kostecki, Todd Hazelwood and the Shell V-Power Racing Team.
“Just six laps from home and unfortunately binned the car at the Elbow, just locked the rears a little bit, you use that kind of balance of the car to rotate the car in but late in the afternoon and I got a bit too narrow," Mostert said.
“The hit was pretty big but I was lucky to hit the tyres not the concrete wall. I’m gutted for our whole team, sponsors and fan support.
“As much as I am gutted, we will regroup and get ready for Round 1 of the Finals in a couple of weeks’ time."
Mostert's damaged car returned to the garage in the hours after the race, where outgoing Walkinshaw TWG Racing Team Principal Carl Faux gave a frank assessment of the damage.
Such was the damage, that Faux quipped that the damaged car was set to go on the chassis jig.
Given the quick turnaround between Bathurst and the Gold Coast, the Toyota squad has opted to move Mostert into its spare chassis for the October 23-25 round at Surfers Paradise.
The chassis in question is WR 029, which has been converted from Ford to Toyota specification.
The team is also repairing Ryan Wood's car, which crashed in Friday practice and late in Sunday's race.
Wood crashed at Forrest's Elbow on Friday morning, which ruled the New Zealander out of Friday qualifying. In the final hour of the Great Race, Wood crashed at Reid Park.
Track action at Surfers Paradise commences on Friday October 23.
