Toyota to make competitive Bathurst debut on October 8-11
"I don't see why it can’t.”
That’s the confidence call by Fabian Coulthard, when asked if he believes Toyota can get the job done at the Mountain, a dream the brand made clear when it joined the sport.
The new-for-2026 GR Supra made a triumphant Supercars enduro debut at The Bend, with Chaz Mostert and Coulthard winning by over 18 seconds.
In a big statement of intent, the sister Ryan Wood/Jaxon Evans car finished third. Despite a tense strategy moment, Toyota nearly pulled off a shock 1-2 finish.
Coulthard entered the 2026 Ryco Enduro Cup with “unfinished business,” and duly delivered a magnificent drive in trying conditions at The Bend, before handing over to Mostert.
The Kiwi played a big role in the development of the Supra, turning plenty of miles in testing alongside veteran Warren Luff.
Winning at The Bend — and doing so without any reliability scares — was pleasing for Coulthard, who said: “It’s a pretty amazing feeling.
"Obviously for myself especially and Luffy to do some of the work late last year developing the Toyota and things like that.
"Obviously, the guys have done a fantastic job evolving it since then, and to come away with two cars on the podium here at a '500' where reliability's not been a huge strength.
“For us to come away with two cars [on the podium], it’s a credit to everyone at Walkinshaw TWG Racing. They gave us the car, they gave us the strategy, and we were able to come away with a result.”
Coulthard, though, was firm. When asked if he believes Toyota can win its Bathurst debut, the now 14-time winner replied: "I don't see why it can't.
“Obviously, that's the aim and that's what we wake up every weekend at Bathurst to try and achieve.
"But I've always said the Mountain chooses you, and the Bend chose us today. Hopefully the Mountain chooses us in a few weeks' time.”
Track action at Mount Panorama commences on Thursday October 8.
