Chaz Mostert aiming for second consecutive championship
Mostert charged to 2025 title with brilliant Finals campaign
Toyota star surged to fourth in points on the Gold Coast
Reigning Repco Supercars Champion Chaz Mostert is hoping that a breakthrough weekend on the Gold Coast can be translated into another ticket to the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Mostert's win in the Finals opener was his third of the season, and the fifth for Toyota in a standout debut Supercars campaign, and it was also the two-time Bathurst winner's most crucial victory.
Not only did it secure his berth through to the Semi Finals, but it vaulted him well up the order, with Mostert now placed fourth entering Sandown, 12 points above the cut-line.
Mostert has already declared that he is all in on going for race wins at Sandown, having firmly established himself as an early Finals specialist with four wins and four podiums in nine Finals starts.
Hie Gold Coast weekend was set up by his clean sweep of 2025, with Mostert revealing in the lead up to Sandown that key learnings from last year's Ford Mustang package were able to be successfully applied to his current Toyota GR Supra.
“Gold Coast was a really good weekend for us," Mostert told media in Melbourne on Thursday.
“It was probably the first time all year where I felt like what we’d done the year before correlated into another year, and our focus and plan.
“So we’ll try and take those same tools going into this weekend, and see if we can find a car that has similar competitiveness to last year."
That's not to say it's all been smooth sailing for Mostert in 2026, with three retirements, a disqualification, and early struggles leading some to suggest he could miss the cut altogether, with Mostert quick to return serve.
The introduction of a 'B-spec' engine at Ipswich proved a breakthrough, despite an engine failure in the finale, before a dominant enduro win at The Bend, which was then followed by a heavy crash at Bathurst that left him reverting to a spare chassis.
But, out the other side has emerged a formidable threat for the 2026 title, as Mostert further reflected: “It’s been a pretty big year, it’s been a tough one bringing a new manufacturer into the sport.
"We’ve been learning our package week in, week out with high-end results, and low-end results. Trying to apply it all at this time of year is important. We’ll just focus on ourselves.”
Another boost could come in the form of Melbourne's unpredictable weather, with rain forecast for the opening race of the weekend on Saturday.
