Brendon Leitch confirmed as driver for 2026 Super2 round
Team Kiwi Racing's comeback via Super2 is part of a long-term plan to return to Supercars.
The TKR name returns to the Supercars fold after several years out and a number of false starts. Most recently, a Great Race wildcard failed to materialise in 2021. TKR also announced its intentions to race at the 2019 Bathurst 1000 with Jaxon Evans and Chris van der Drift.
This year, TKR is celebrating its 25th anniversary of it maiden full-time main game campaign.
TKR ran the likes of Shane van Gisbergen, Jason Richards, Paul Radisich, Craig Baird, Fabian Coulthard and Chris Pither. TKR also ran Andre Heimgartner in Porsche Carrera Cup.
Leitch is the latest Kiwi the fold, but TKR owner David John is keen to return a Kiwi team to the grid.
It comes as Supercars enjoys an expanded presence in New Zealand, with Taupō and Christchurch hosting a blockbuster Double Header in April.
TKR last raced in Supercars in 2008.
“This is the first step for us. It would be great for the Kiwi fans and the sport in general to have a Kiwi team back in Supercars eventually, but we need to walk before we run,” John said.
“Entering in the Super2 Series made a lot of sense for us and for Brendon. It’s about dipping our toes in the water, getting reacquainted with the Supercars paddock again, and seeing where we match up.
“The fact that we’re still going after 26 years is a testament to our loyal supporters and the longevity of the TKR brand. More than 150 supporters are joining TKR at Bathurst on the official Team Kiwi Racing Bathurst Tour.
"We want to be known and remembered as the team that gives New Zealanders the chance they deserve.”
Garry Rogers Motorsport returns to the grid this year after a six year absence, having exited the full-time game in 2019. Team boss Barry Rogers didn't rule out future wildcards when asked, insisting his team wasn't thinking beyond Bathurst.
Leitch will test his Commodore at Winton in the weeks leading to Bathurst on October 8-11.
