Broc Feeney made another flying NASCAR visit last weekend
Feeney was trackside as Shane van Gisbergen won at Sonoma
Triple Eight driver starred in Ford Mustang at Bathurst 12 Hour
Shane van Gisbergen remains intrigued by the NASCAR potential of Broc Feeney, who was trackside in Sonoma at the weekend.
Red Bull Ampol Racing star Feeney attended the NASCAR event at Sonoma, where former teammate van Gisbergen won both the Cup and O’Reilly races.
Already a 30-time Supercars race winner, current Supercars points leader Feeney has emerged as one of the most versatile racers in Australia, notably impressing in GT3 machinery.
Feeney starred in a HRT Racing-run Ford Mustang GT3 entry at the Bathurst 12 Hour in February, furthering his credentials as a racing star outside Supercars.
Feeney, who was trackside with van Gisbergen at Martinsville last year, has made no secret of his ambition to try out NASCAR, but fell short of securing a deal in 2025.
Team Penske, RFK Racing, Front Row Racing and Wood Brothers Racing currently represent Ford in the Cup Series. A likely suitor for a Feeney cameo would be RFK, which ran a third entry for Cam Waters at Sonoma in 2024.
Speaking on the Dale Jr Download podcast, van Gisbergen asserted that Feeney — now racing a Triple Eight Ford in Supercar — still wants to have a swing at NASCAR.
Van Gisbergen added that Feeney could offer a boost to Ford’s recent winless road course form in the Cup Series, with Chris Buescher the last Mustang driver to do so at Watkins Glen in September 2024, besting the Kiwi in a last lap showdown.
“I think [Feeney] tried for Watkins [Glen] and Sonoma, he really wants to have a crack,” van Gisbergen said.
“I’m sure he’d be like me. Maybe he’d want to have a go on the ovals after, but it’d be really interesting to see how he’d go.
“I think Ford struggled a little bit on the road courses, so it’d be good to get someone good in that car. Not that the others aren’t good, but it’d be really good to see what Broc could do and how much he could do in the future too.”
"He’s on the ovals all the time iRacing, watching all the ovals, texting me all the time. I think he would be really good.”
Feeney, like teammate Will Brown, is contracted with Triple Eight through 2029.
The 2026 Supercars season resumes in Townsville on July 10-12. International fans can watch on SuperView.
