Broc Feeney surprised rivals didn't fight Brodie Kostecki in Melbourne
Kostecki claimed championship lead with three of four wins at Albert Park
DJR picked off drivers at will, before Feeney proved a major roadblock
Broc Feeney was surprised rival drivers didn't make Brodie Kostecki's life more difficult as the Dick Johnson Racing driver took control in Melbourne.
The championship swung Kostecki's way at a dramatic Melbourne SuperSprint, with the Shell V-Power Racing Team driver winning three races.
After winning the first race from pole, Kostecki had his work cut out, and was only denied by Feeney in a thrilling Race 6 battle.
Kostecki was otherwise unchallenged throughout, notably passing Matt Payne with ease for the lead in Race 5, clearing Aaron Cameron twice in Races 6 and 7, and picking off Will Brown and Thomas Randle in Race 7.
Payne was furious after letting victory slip in Race 5. Brown did, however, try to hold Kostecki off, only to bowl a wide at Turn 11 and throw the lead away.
Kostecki's strength was through the back of the fast Albert Park circuit, setting up overtake after overtake into the big stop at Turn 11.
In contrast, Feeney made the widest Red Bull Ampol Ford possible, ultimately denying Kostecki victory in what proved one of the battles of the season.
Feeney defended at the first chance of asking on the weekend, aggressively cutting Cameron off on the run to Turn 1 in the first race. A day later, Feeney and Cameron clashed, with the latter tipped into a spin by Kai Allen.
Looking back on the weekend on the latest Drivers Only episode, Feeney suggested his rivals missed a trick by making Kostecki work harder for his positions.
“To be honest, I was a little bit surprised with the way Matt and that raced him early in the weekend,” Feeney said.
“Matt was in the lead in Race [5] and didn't block him. I feel like I was the only one. I mean, Will tried — Will obviously made the mistake.
"I was getting confused, so I was watching the race and I'm like, 'why is no one blocking this bloke?’
"Even when Aaron Cameron was behind me, he was very fast, but didn't put the block on. And I'm like, 'oh mate, I'm gonna show you some wide lines’.”
Feeney and Kostecki were both up for the battle, and an error by the latter led to a hairy moment that led to a redress. Kostecki, though, was happy to play up to Feeney's games.
Feeney, meanwhile, had flashbacks to days karting on the Gold Coast.
“We had so much fun. Like we were texting after the race, like ‘far out. That was cool’,” Feeney continued.
“It was like going to Slideways, back in the day just trying to run into each other and put the big blocks on."
Kostecki leads Cam Waters by 28 points heading to New Zealand.
