Broc Feeney sweeps Gold Coast 500 poles
Red Bull Ampol Racing lockout front row for Race 32
Four Finals drivers miss Shootout, including leader Matt Payne
Broc Feeney has secured back-to-back Boost Mobile Pole Awards on the Gold Coast, as a wet qualifying session left several Finals Drivers buried deep in the pack.
Feeney will lead an all-Red Bull Ampol Racing front row, with teammate Will Brown second, whilst Aaron Cameron starred to qualify third.
Four Finals Drivers missed the Shootout, headlined by points leader Matt Payne, whilst Jack Le Brocq and Kai Allen's win and you're in hopes took a serious blow.
The final race of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 will begin at 2:45pm local time/3:45pm AEDT.
Q1
Drivers were greeted with heavy wet conditions with 12 minutes on the clock to set positions 19-24.
The treacherous conditions were laid bare for all to see when Jackson Walls spun through the Beach Chicane and clobbered the tyre wall, bringing out an early red flag before all drivers could register an opening time.
Seven and a half minutes remained when the field rolled back out, and with not enough time for drivers to peel in for a second set of tyres, it turned into a battle of who would get the best of the track conditions.
Whilst times continued to improve right to the finish, some key Finals contenders couldn't find improvement, namely Jack Le Brocq, Anton De Pasquale. and Kai Allen.
All three were shock eliminations from Q1 in 20th, 21st, and 22nd respectively. Thomas Randle would join them in the drop zone in 19th, with Rylan Gray and Walls completing the eliminated six.
Matt Payne, Cam Waters, and Brodie Kostecki were also playing it fine in 14th, 16th, and 17th respectively, with the latter also placed under investigation after potentially impeding David Reynolds.
Saturday pole sitter Broc Feeney was fastest on a 1:15.9945s.
Q2
The rain began to fall as Q2 began, with a lot of emphasis placed on turning laps early to get ahead of any heavier weather, with a divergence in tyre strategy.
Keeping their used, warm tyres on saw Feeney and Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Will Brown go to the top early, whilst putting new tyres on saw Saturday race winner Chaz Mostert build into the session.
Zach Bates went close to bringing out another red flag when he slapped the tyre wall at Turn 2, coming to a halt facing backwards on the run to the hairpin, before flick spinning and getting back underway.
Attention turned to the drop zone once again in the dying minutes, with championship leader Payne only 14th in the final minutes, before briefly lifting himself into 10th.
Just as quickly as he was in the 10, he was back out as Waters lifted himself back in. Payne had nothing in response, and would only manage 12th, with both Penrite Fords shock omissions from the Top Ten Shootout.
Feeney and Brown would finish the session on top, the #88 Ford leading the way on a 1:15.7818s, whilst four non-Finals Drivers put in sterling efforts to make the Shootout, namely Cameron Hill (fifth), Cooper Murray (sixth), Aaron Cameron (seventh), and debutant Jarrod Hughes (eighth).
Kostecki (third), Mostert (fourth), Waters (ninth), and Ryan Wood (10th) completed the Shootout field.
Top Ten Shootout
Wood's Shootout benchmark was a 1:16.1924s, a very impressive lap that was a tenth up on his effort to qualify for the Shootout, with typically high commitment through the chicanes.
Waters was more than two tenths down, whilst Hughes put in a very impressive maiden Shootout performance to go just 0.0173s off Wood.
Cameron would move the marker substantially forward to a 1:15.7732s, whilst Murray went close to putting in to the fence at both chicanes to go fourth, whilst Hill had an even more adventurous lap, nearly spinning at Turn 4 after clobbering the Turn 2 tyres.
A mistake at Turn 4 put paid to Mostert's hopes, whilst Kostecki's lap faded as it went on. Brown stitched his lap together to deny Cameron a maiden pole, moving the marker to a 1:15.5191s.
However, Feeney wouldn't be denied, launching another spectacular run through the Beach Chicane to set a 1:15.4474s, pipping the sister entry by 0.0717s.
Cameron will line up alongside Kostecki on the second row, with Wood, Hughes, Murray, Waters, Mostert, and Hill completing the top 10.
