New car not the reason behind form reversal, says Cam Waters
Waters has won two of last six races, surged back into title fight
Ford star debuted Tickford-built Mustang in Tasmania, to lean results
Cam Waters is adamant his new-for-2026 Ford Mustang isn’t the reason behind his mid-season return to form.
The Tickford Racing driver has powered into the championship discussion on the back of two standout weekends in Darwin and Townsville.
Waters backed up his Darwin Triple Crown-winning weekend with a charge to third for the round in Townsville, behind Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne.
Across the last two rounds, only Payne has scored more points than Waters, who had gone 47 races without a Supercars win before he broke through in Darwin.
Waters debuted his new Mustang in Tasmania, where he raced from ninth to 12th, ninth to seventh, and 13th to 10th. Those results, Waters believes, disproves that the new car has been the secret to his success.
“I wouldn’t say it’s got anything to do with the chassis, because we rolled that out at Tassie and we still sucked,” Waters said.
“Really, after Tassie we kind of just put our heads together again and worked out where we’ve kind of been and changed our set-up philosophy again.
“We’ve tried bloody everything this year and we’ve made a bit of progress obviously in Darwin and this weekend.”
Despite charging back into the title fight, Waters is refusing to look too far ahead.
“I don’t want to get too ahead of myself,” he continued.
“Just want to take it race by race, and get to the next round and make sure we’re fast there. It’s just all about being consistent at the moment really and learning your package.”
Waters is 195 points behind Penrite Racing rival Payne heading to Perth on July 31-August 2.
