Broc Feeney bullish on home track advantage
Northern teams have won 21 of the last 28 races in Ipswich
Feeney trails Sprint Cup leader Matt Payne by 118 points
Broc Feeney is hopeful a home track advantage presents itself to Triple Eight, as the Queenslander looks to pull off a Repco Sprint Cup boilover.
Red Bull Ampol Racing star Feeney enters the weekend as Matt Payne's chief rival for the Sprint Cup, with the winner earning the first automatic Finals berth and 25 bonus points for the Elimination Final on the Gold Coast.
Over the past 28 Supercars races held at Queensland Raceway, northern teams have won 21, with Triple Eight going three from three last year.
Feeney — who stole victory from Payne in the second Perth race, before the Penrite Racing driver turned the tables in the finale — insists his rival is "beatable."
"I'm just looking forward to be back racing at QR. It was an awesome event last year,” said Feeney, who claimed all three poles and won twice in Ipswich last August.
“For us, it's a home track. Do we have a home track advantage? I certainly hope so. We'll find out. But we want to be back in the fight for race wins. So if we can get up front, we'll be making sure that we stay up there.
"Is Matt beatable? 100%. I mean, everyone's beatable. They're doing a great job at the moment, him and his team. But, we beat 'em on Saturday and we nearly beat 'em on Sunday.
“We know we're far from our best at the moment. We're hoping Queensland Raceway is another step in that right direction for us getting back in the fight for every race.
“Watch this space. We're certainly chasing him down at the moment and looking forward to getting back up on the top step."
Feeney needs to overturn a 118-point deficit to Payne to win the Sprint Cup. Feeney, though, was simply pleased to be back in the fight for wins in Perth, having missed the podium in Darwin and Townsville.
“It was great at Perth to bounce back with a win and a second. To be disappointed with a second again is a fantastic thing,” Feeney said.
"Don't get me wrong, we've been battling at the back end of the top end for quite a few rounds now. So to be back in the fight for wins is fantastic.
“Myself, Jamie [Whincup, Team Principal], and the team, we were disappointed. We felt like we let a win get away, but that feeling again, chasing race wins is why we wake up in the morning and go drive race cars.
“Pumped to be back in that situation, and stoked to be disappointed with the second again. It's a great feeling."
Track action commences in Ipswich on Friday. Tickets are on sale now.
