Aaron Cameron responds to stinging criticism from James Courtney
Former teammate declared Cameron "too laid back"
Cameron 20th in points after six rounds
Aaron Cameron might be one of Supercars' great characters off-track, but he wants it known that on-track he is as serious a competitor as anyone on the 2026 grid.
That comes after former teammate Blanchard Racing Team teammate James Courtney made an extraordinary claim in the lead-up to Darwin that Cameron needed to lift with not only his results, but also his attitude.
The 2010 Supercars champion said the following on Supercars' brand-new Pit Lane Preview presented by Equip Super: "I think Aaron needs to start to take it a bit more serious, I think he's a bit too laid back in his approach and a bit too quick to make jokes about it.
"It's an expensive business we're running here, we're at the top level of Australian motorsport, and he definitely needs to start delivering, especially when James [Golding] is doing such a good job."
Cameron was rapid to start the season, but racing has been a major Achilles heel, 20th in the standings far from an accurate representation of the 2024 Super2 runner-up's raw speed.
For all of the hits Cameron has taken throughout the season so far, the most recent whack from Courtney, for whom Cameron won an Australian karting title in 2018, came as something as a shock.
However, the 26-year-old isn't getting bogged down, declaring that he isn't concerned by the outside noise as he looks to consistently capitalise on the speed he has shown.
"It doesn't really faze me coming from James," responded Cameron on the Equip Super Cool Down Lap when asked about Courtney's comments.
"We had some good fun last year, but I take everything off the track pretty fun and keep it loose, and everything on the track is as serious as it can be.
"I don't really care what he has to say."
Whilst BRT's stunning early season form was one of the feel good stories of the season, that form is now starting to fade away as the season wears on.
Having claimed a remarkable front row lockout to start the season in Sydney, only Golding was able to snare a top 10 qualifying result in Darwin, whilst neither driver was able to claim a top 10 finish.
The form slip has seen Cameron's Finals hopes all but fizzle out, whilst Golding is also slipping closer to the cut line, and now sits ninth in the championship,
However, the LIQUI MOLY BLAHST Ford pilot could still see the positive, rating his weekend as a: "Six or a seven, sort of just a weekend where we just didn't really have it I'd say as a team.
"I think we got closer and closer to getting the car more comfortable to be able to do it in the race, but certainly just need to find that time, but I think it's not that much time.
"The field is so tight that we're looking for two, three tenths in qualifying, and then in the race it's probably a bit the same with that race pace."
The 2026 Repco Supercars Championship continues with the NTI Townsville 500 from July 10-12.
