Campbell Logan looking to turnaround tough opening to 2025
Second-year driver 15th in points, with eighth in Race 3 the highlight
Townsville a standout weekend in Logan's debut campaign
After claiming their first title in Supercars competition in a 15-year first courtesy of Zach Bates in 2024, the start to Walkinshaw Andretti United's 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series has been anything but smooth sailing.
21-year-old Tasmanian sophomore Campbell Logan was thrust into the role of senior driver with the addition of WAU's Toyota GR Cup star Matt Hillyer in place of Bates, with Logan debuting a brand-new ZB Commodore in Sydney.
Logan sits just 15th in points after a tough run in Sydney and on home turf at Symmons Plains, whilst Hillyer is further back in 20th after failing to finish Race 3 in Tasmania.
The driver of the #2 Commodore admits that it hasn't been the start to the year he was expecting to have, with various issues plaguing his start to the season.
"It's been completely against what we set out to achieve this year," Logan told Supercars.com.
"The first rounds have been quite a struggle for different reasons. The issues we had in Sydney and Tassie were both unrelated, but the team has been working really hard in the background to make sure we get on top of those little one percenters which have been costing us.
"We have a great package which we proved last year in Townsville. I think we've even made it a little bit better this year, so I'm excited just to go and have a clean run and show what our cars can do for the weekend."
Logan gained 10 positions in Race 3 to finish eighth in front of his home crowd, and will be looking to replicate that form at in Townsville.
Townsville was the standout weekend of Logan's rookie campaign, with two fifth place qualifying efforts, and a fourth on Sunday, and he believes there's no reason why he can't repeat those performances.
"I think it's a great chance, like I touched on our cars are quite strong there, it's a strong track for me, I really enjoy the round up in Townsville.
"It's an awesome track, to get experience on a street circuit is just second to none in my opinion, it's one of the coolest things we get to do, so just really excited to get up there and get the weekend started."
Any chances of a big result in the first race of the weekend last year were dashed when Logan was caught up in the Lap 1 pile-up triggered by Cooper Murray and Brad Vaughan's collision exiting Turn 2.
Logan is hoping not to get caught up in any incidents this year, but admits that with nine rookies in the field there could be incidents aplenty.
"I hope not because that cost me a good race in the first race last year, I got caught up in someone else's shunt off the start which was a bit disappointing.
"Definitely a tighter circuit, you've got the walls, it feels really tight, especially in these cars. There's a lot of guys who did Toyota 86 last year, and I remember when I went last year it's just so much bigger of a car around a tight circuit.
"You really feel it, so there's definitely a high chance there'll be more action."
At 240 points behind series leader Rylan Gray, any form of championship challenge is unlikely, however Logan is confident that Townsville can be the reset that both he and the team needs.
"100%, it's been a bit of a happy hunting ground for me which is cool, and it's been a tough couple of rounds so we've just hit reset and want to try and see what we can do for the rest of the year.
"Wherever that will put is, I'm not sure, but I'm just going to take it one step at a time with the team, and one session at a time, and we'll just focus on maximising on what we've got and see where that puts us, hopefully somewhere out the front."
The 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series returns at the NTI Townsville 500 from July 11-13. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
