Rising star Cameron McLeod wins on world stage in Le Mans
Super2 race winner took out opening Mustang Challenge on Friday
McLeod will resume Super2 campaign in Townsville in July
Rising star Cameron McLeod has caught the attention of the racing world with victory at the world-famous Le Mans event.
The third-generation racer, who won the opening race of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series in February, won the opening race of the Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational.
The one-mark support category features 40 entries of Ford’s Dark Horse R version of the Mustang.
The series is supporting the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the feature race commencing at 12:00am AEST on Sunday.
The young driver won Race 1 from pole position by the official margin of 5.553s on what was a bruising day for compatriot David Wall.
Wall, a former Supercars driver and Carrera Cup contender, crashed heavily late in the race, triggering a race-ending red flag.
The race was wound back one lap, with Wall reclassified sixth. By that time, McLeod was already well up the road, beating Sam Paley and Marco Signoretti.
McLeod and Wall were joined by touring car veteran Andrew Miedecke, with former Triple Eight co-owner Tim Miles, current Triple Eight co-owner Tony Quinn, and Bathurst 12 Hour veteran Keith Kassulke also racing.
The Aussies were part of a 40-car grid that included the likes of Chris Harris, Frankie Muniz, Tanner Foust and Ford CEO Jim Farley.
Muniz and Farley were 18th and 19th, with Miles 30th, two positions behind Hadiran Morrall.
McLeod not only led the race from wire to wire, but also also set the fastest lap, a 4:20.938s, on lap 2. He will contest Race 2 on Saturday, again starting from pole position.
He will resume his Super2 campaign in Townsville next month, and will race with Cameron Hill and Matt Stone Racing at this year’s Enduro Cup races at The Bend and Bathurst.
The 2025 Supercars season will resume at the betr Darwin Triple Crown on June 20-22. Tickets for the event are on sale now. International viewers can follow all the action on Superview.
