Exhaust valve actuator issue drops Kai Allen in Saturday Shootout
Penrite Racing driver qualified second, finished eighth in one-lap dash
Allen enters Saturday race 53 points behind Broc Feeney
Penrite Racing has resolved the engine issue that stalled Kai Allen in Saturday's Shootout, in what was the latest hurdle for a championship contender in Adelaide.
Allen qualified second for Saturday's Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, but ended up eighth in a session dominated by Broc Feeney and challenging track conditions.
The #26 Penrite Mustang raised eyebrows as it flew down pit straight, with the car seemingly nursing an engine issue. As the lap wore on, Allen drifted further away from Feeney's time, with the Penrite Ford approximately 5km/h down on the back straight.
Allen managed to complete his lap, and will share the fourth row with Tickford Racing's Thomas Randle.
"It had an issue with the exhaust valve actuator," Penrite Racing Team Principal David Cauchi told Supercars.com.
"A plug had come a little bit loose, so that wasn't working, which is why it sounded like a tractor. We noticed that once it came back in, checked it, and it's fine now."
Points leader Broc Feeney claimed pole, with Will Brown fifth, Allen eighth and Chaz Mostert 12th.
On Allen starting eighth, Cauchi added: "It's not ideal. We'd love to be starting from the front row, but you know, that's what we got. It was better it happened then than probably at the start of the race of course.
"So, we'll just have to march forward from there. The car's been pretty speedy in race trim, so we'll see what we've got and we'll give it everything."
The 78-lap Race 33 will commence at 3:20pm local time/3:50pm AEDT. Fox Sports, Kayo Sports, the Seven Network and Sky NZ take live coverage. International fans can watch on SuperView.
