Momentum building to new Perth street circuit after WA election
Cook Government pledged to build $217 million venue in Burswood Park
Supercars will return to Perth's historic Wanneroo circuit in June
Momentum is building towards a new Supercars street circuit event in Perth amid the overnight Western Australian election result.
Earlier this year, WA Premier Roger Cook pledged a promise to build a $217 million street circuit and entertainment precinct in Burswood Park should Labor win re-election.
The Labor government, led by Premier Cook, won a third consecutive four-year term overnight.
Last June, the Cook Government declared support for a new event around Burswood Park.
The project took a major step forward in January, when the Cook government promised to spend $217 million on a new entertainment precinct if re-elected.
It would see local roads converted into a street circuit, grandstands installed and other parts of Burswood Park upgraded, including a 20,000-seat outdoor music amphitheatre and a multi-use function centre.
Construction is slated to start in the next 12 months, with the aim of having the circuit ready for 2027, potentially to open that year's Repco Supercars Championship season.
The plans are touted to generate tens of millions for the state economy. In January, Premier Cook met with Supercars CEO Shane Howard at the Burswood site to unveil concept circuit designs.
Supercars has raced in Western Australia for over 50 years, with the championship to return to CARCO.com.au Raceway for Round 5 in June.
CARCO.com.au Raceway will host the fifth of eight Repco Sprint Cup rounds in 2025, with Races 14, 15 and 16 to form a key part of the hunt for the 2025 championship.
The historic Wanneroo venue will become the first circuit in ATCC/Supercars history to host 100 championship races, with Race 16 of the season to be the circuit’s 100th since its 1973 debut.
The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will resume in Melbourne next weekend, with Supercars to race on all four days of the March 13-16 event.
