Wood claimed maiden Supercars win in Perth last year
A closer look at Townsville has revealed a breakout weekend for Walkinshaw TWG Racing, with Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood both optimistic for coming rounds.
The Toyota team needed to lift in Townsville following a tough weekend in Darwin, which saw the squad deliver its lowest points haul weekend of the season.
Mostert and Wood returned serve with pace consistent enough to sit in the top five, with the reigning champion recording his best points weekend of his title defence.
WTWGR went podium-less, but it doesn’t tell the full story. The team scored 58% of the maximum points available on the weekend, trailing only its Taupō efforts — a weekend that featured just two races.
While he didn’t add to his 114 career podiums, Mostert was satisfied with the outcome.
"Overall it was a consistent round — P5, P7, P4 — and we're trending in the right direction,” Mostert penned post-round.
"The Supra had great pace in race trim, and the whole Walkinshaw crew were just incredible all weekend. We'll take the positives into Perth and keep pushing.”
Perth was one of the team’s best rounds of 2025, despite championing a Finals-first strategy throughout the regular season. Mostert and Wood both claimed poles, with the latter securing his maiden Supercars win.
More of the same next weekend would go a long way for both drivers to shore up their Finals hopes, given they still sit only 140 and 116 points clear of the Finals cut-line.
When asked on Supercars' Equip Super Cool Down Lap podcast how crucial a big points day for the team was, Wood replied: "Yeah, 100%.
"[Race 21, clashing with Kai Allen] wasn't ideal for my side, and feel like we've just made a meal of a few races, and we've had some bad luck along the way.
"So considering we're still in the 10 with how much stuff that's happened during the year, we've been pretty alright so far.
“Our bad days seem to be inside the 10 at the moment, and feels like we're racing against the same guys each day, each weekend. We're getting there in the long run, and there's some fast cars at the moment.
"But I tell you what, if we have the same car speed at Perth this year as we did last year, I reckon it could be a cool weekend.”
