Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson has sampled a Bathurst-winning Supercar formerly raced by Kiwi countryman Shane van Gisbergen.

Lawson, who competes in F1 for Racing Bulls, recently drove the ex-van Gisbergen Triple Eight Race Engineering-built Chevrolet Camaro at Highlands Motorsport Park.

It was Lawson’s second taste of a Gen3 Supercar, the New Zealander now having steer both Chevrolet and Ford machinery, after his laps in a Blanchard Racing Team Mustang at Albert Park in 2024.

The van Gisbergen Chevrolet, which won the 2023 Bathurst 1000, is owned by part Triple Eight team owner Tony Quinn, and is based in New Zealand.

Lawson drove the Supercar in Red Bull Ampol Racing's 2025 livery, the car being reskinned for Triple Eight's season launch in New Zealand earlier this year.

The car was also driven in New Zealand by Lawson's incoming teammate Arvid Lindblad, who won this year's Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship in New Zealand.

Lawson raved about the Supercar in a Highlands social media video.

“It’s such a fun car to drive,” the Kiwi said.

“I loved it. It’s the most raw car to drive, with the big sequential shifter and you’ve got three pedals. No assists. It’s just very raw, very loud.”

Lawson took passengers for rides on a day that saw over $50,000 raised for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

He also vouched for Supercars action at Highlands. New Zealand will host two Supercars rounds for the first time in 2026, at Taupō and Christchurch’s Ruapuna.

“It’s sick around this track as well, lots of kerbs, camber, stuff like that. It would be amazing to see them race here one day,” Lawson added.

The 2026 Repco Supercars Championship commences in Sydney on February 20-22. Tickets for 2026 events are on sale now.
