We’ve already seen it this season at Sydney Motorsport Park, and it has happened at Mount Panorama before.
It’s the most dramatic way to decide a race — a last lap pass.
Each time we head back to Mount Panorama, it’s hard not to forget the dramatic finish to the 2014 race, when Chaz Mostert stole victory late on.
On the 161st and final tour, Mostert cleared a fuel-poor Jamie Whincup at Forrest's Elbow, and went on to win the race.
Per AN1 Records, just 14 races in ATCC/Supercars Championship history have been decided by a last-lap pass — and it’s still remarkable to think that one came in the biggest race of the year.
Obviously, the most recent instance came back in February, when Cam Waters famously burgled Broc Feeney at the death to win in a stunning photo finish.
Before that, Anton De Pasquale sent Shane van Gisbergen into a spin at the final corner of the 2022 Townsville finale. De Pasquale crossed the line first, but a penalty handed victory back to van Gisbergen.
There were two instances in both 2004 and 2014. In 2004, Marcos Ambrose barged Mark Skaife out of the way in Darwin, opening the door to Russell Ingall. Then, Cameron McConville pounced on Rick Kelly at Winton, despite yellow flags flying.
After Mostert pinched victory from Whincup, Garth Tander dramatically ran out of fuel with metres remaining at Phillip Island, gifting victory to Scott McLaughlin.
In a twist of fate, Tander stole victory in the 2009 Phillip Island 500 after leader Craig Lowndes slowed with a puncture.
Two years before his fuel disaster in Bathurst, Whincup claimed an emotional victory in Adelaide after old mate Will Davison coughed through Turn 8.
With regards to team tactics, it involved the same team twice. George Fury pulled over for Gibson Nissan teammate Glenn Seton at Sandown in 1987. Seven years later, Skaife pulled over for teammate Jim Richards.
Could it happen in Bathurst again, 11 years after Mostert's Hail Mary? Find out at the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 9-12. Tickets are on sale now.
