Chaz Mostert jumped from sixth to second in Finals standings on Gold Coast
WAU star hasn’t finished on podium where he finished on the podium the weekend prior
Mostert winless in 16 races at Sandown, which hosts Semi Final on November 14-16
Chaz Mostert was the man of the moment at the Elimination Final, winning both races on the Gold Coast to rubber stamp his ticket to Sandown.
The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver won both races at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, dominating on Saturday before overhauling Broc Feeney on Sunday.
It was Mostert’s best weekend since he won both Sydney Motorsport Park races last July, a performance that set up an unlikely — and ultimately failed — title charge.
While Mostert’s charge to double victory was built on a fact-finding campaign that began in Sydney, there remains a trend he needs to buck should be progress to Adelaide.
The Mobil 1 Optus Ford driver hasn’t finished on the podium at any event where he finished on the podium the weekend prior, meaning he has been unable to string together two rounds in a row.
Mostert started the season with two podiums in Sydney, before finishing 10th, 10th and 22nd (due to a penalty) in Melbourne.
In response to his Grand Prix slump, Mostert won in New Zealand and was second for the round, before going 14th, 19th and 18th in a Symmons Plains shocker.
To Perth, the #25 Mustang reeled off two podiums and a pole, before he finished sixth, 17th and 12th in Darwin. The up-and-down trend continued, Mostert claiming two podiums in Townsville, before missing the start in the Ipswich opener.
A fruitless run in the enduros — a failed strategy gamble at The Bend and engine-related DNF in Bathurst — preceded his Gold Coast masterclass. All told, Mostert has been on a rollercoaster ride only Dreamworld can rival.
Mostert has shown he can get on the podium from anywhere — 48% of his 27 Gen3 podiums have come from starting fifth or worse, the highest of anyone — but WAU will be hoping he can buck the trend at Sandown.
Crucially, WAU were superb on both tyre compounds at Surfers Paradise, giving the Ford squad hope Mostert can score enough points at Sandown to qualify for the Grand Final.
"We’ll celebrate until 6:00am on Monday and then we’ll be fully committed to the next event at Sandown," WAU Team Principal Carl Faux said after the Gold Coast.
"All year we’ve been looking for things for The Finals and both cars were lightning quick through the weekend.
"It was an absolutely brilliant weekend for Chaz. We took risks and they paid off."
