Chaz Mostert 65 points from series lead after Sydney 500
WAU star turned 7.0 qualifying average into 3.0 race average in Sydney
Mostert has won three championship races at Albert Park
He scored two podiums and left Sydney third overall, yet in a warning of sorts to his rivals, Chaz Mostert admits he still didn't package it together.
On paper, Walkinshaw Andretti United's haul of two podiums represented a backwards step from last year's Sydney SuperNight, where Mostert won both races.
Fast forward to the 2025 season opener, and Mostert was among the frontrunners, yet far from perfect.
Mostert claimed two podiums and a fourth in the three races to end up third in the standings, behind Tickford Racing driver Cam Waters and reigning champion Will Brown.
The two-time Bathurst winner started eighth, third and 10th for the three races, leading to a qualifying average of 7.0. It could've been more for Mostert, if not for a mistake in the Sunday Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout that saw him start 10th.
However, finishes of second, fourth and third delivered a race average of 3.0, the #25 Mobil 1 Optus Ford Mustang gaining 12 spots over the three races.
According to WAU Team Principal Carl Faux, the team will keep continuing to experiment with set-ups throughout the year to prepare for a run in the Finals. The fans believe Mostert can get the job done, with the driver placing third in Supercars.com's poll.
In Sydney Mostert hailed Waters' performance, but insisted he left plenty on the table.
“I think we got some good things there, I think we just didn’t package it all right together this weekend,” Mostert said after the Sydney finale.
"In saying that, don’t take anything away from what Cam and Tickford did this weekend. That was, for me personally, probably some of the best driving I’ve ever seen Cam do.
"When you’re watching those qualifying laps and absolutely getting the most out of that car was really impressive.
“It’s safe to say, he’s probably the man to watch this year. We’ve got a little bit of work to do in our squad, but we’re keen for the challenge and we’ll see how we go at the next one.”
Mostert has three wins (2019, two in 2022) at the Grand Prix, where the season continues on March 13-16.
The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the Melbourne SuperSprint, which will feature at the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 on March 13-16.
