Chaz Mostert chasing first Supercars race win in Townsville
WAU driver has nine podiums without victory in North Queensland
Mostert only just in mathematical Repco Sprint Cup contention
Ask Chaz Mostert, and he'll tell you he doesn't care about how many wins his rivals have, or what the championship picture is.
Instead, the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver is determined to improve what has been letting him down to this point of the season, with Mostert determined to break his Townsville duck.
Mostert is fifth overall heading to this weekend's event in North Queensland, but is 479 points behind leader Broc Feeney, who has won seven of the last nine races.
The 33-year-old is still 235 points above the Finals cut-line with four rounds to go before the post-season, with Mostert yet to show his true hand in 2025.
Save for a brilliant victory in Taupō, Mostert has five podiums across the Sydney, New Zealand and Perth rounds, and is fifth in the standings despite being ranked ninth in qualifying.
When asked how he can take it to his rivals, Mostert replied: “You just focus on yourself, which is always the whole thing for the year.
"I don't even know how many wins or certain things people have. I don't even know the point situation, to be honest. I know we're in the 10 at the moment, which is great, but the story of my year has been a little bit up and down."
WAU teammate Ryan Wood leads the qualifying head-to-head 13-6, with the races split 9-9. In what has been a rollercoaster season for WAU, just three of the 18 races have seen both cars finish inside the top 10.
Despite having the better of Mostert over one lap, Wood is still outside the top 10, suffering DNFs in Perth and Darwin, and copping penalties in Melbourne and New Zealand.
“Qualifying pace has been a real, real struggle for us this year. Ryan's been able to unlock that speed on one lap pace, and he's out-done me quite a few times this year," Mostert added.
“We're getting somewhere on the set-up front. Bit of a change in the background going into the next weekend as well, which I'm really excited about.”
Mostert has a total of nine Townsville Supercars podium finishes without standing on the top step of the podium. He came close last year, famously battling Cam Waters for victory on the Saturday.
Make no mistake, Mostert is sick of coming second, saying: “There's places you feel like you can't really risk too much, and there's some places you can really, really send it.
“The race there creates awesome strategy and it's a really hard place for the engineers to set the car up to be super fast there.
"I really love the challenge every time we go up there. It's one that I've never won. It always seems to get away from me. I've had a few trophies there, but I'm sick of being the bridesmaid.
“We’ll see how we can go up there. It's one place I definitely wanna win. Hopefully we’ll be in the mix again like we were last year."
Mostert will resume his 2025 campaign at the NTI Townsville 500 on July 11-13. Supercars drivers will contest races on all three days of the event. Tickets for the NTI Townsville 500 are on sale now. International viewers can watch the action on SuperView.
