Chaz Mostert reveals alternate approach to Finals pressure cooker
WAU star exploded into title contention with Gold Coast 500 clean sweep
Mostert moved from from sixth to second in points heading to Semi Final
Instead of crunching the numbers, looking at his rivals and getting caught up by The Finals pressure cooker, Chaz Mostert insists his simple plan is to "drive the car as fast as I can."
The Walkinshaw Andretti United star exploded into title contention with a stunning clean sweep of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, vaulting from sixth to second in points.
It had been a wildly inconsistent season for Mostert heading to Surfers Paradise. Each time he scored a podium, Mostert failed to trouble the trophies at the following round.
The two-time Bathurst winner clinched his Finals berth before the Bathurst cut-off, but the jury was well and truly out on whether he could make in impact in the post-season.
However, a season-long fact-finding mission helped deliver a shock two-from-two performance. On Saturday, Mostert raced away from the field, before a strategy masterclass translated into Sunday victory.
Speaking on The Formation Lap, though, Mostert insisted his own personal approach of 'drive fast and try to win' remained unchanged.
“To be honest, I didn't really think any different of how we kind of thought all year,” Mostert said.
"And it's funny, you have all that Finals talk and what you need to try and do. I think I'm not smart enough to quite work out what I need to do, other than just try and drive the car as fast as I can.
“Obviously proved at the Gold Coast, if you just try to win the race and try to make sure you're on the podium and have good race weekends like that, the rest looks after itself.
“No doubt going to Sandown, we'll just try the same mental approach, which is try and win the race. If we can do that, the rest will sort itself out.”
Wood has had Mostert's number in qualifying this season, and could help his teammate in several ways, from offering a tow in qualifying, sacrificing track position, and ruffling other drivers' feathers.
Mostert, however, insisted Wood's biggest support will come from ongoing feedback throughout the weekend, in order for the #25 crew to produce the best possible car for their last remaining Finals hope.
"I think the biggest thing he'll be able to help is, he'll probably just be able to give me a lot more feedback with our practice plan and qualifying, and make sure we're rolling out two really strong cars,” Mostert said.
"I think the last couple of rounds we've worked really hard on that. This year we had a lot of focus, especially on the 25 side of the garage, on really doing a lot of development work throughout the year.
"His biggest strength is just probably being able to focus a little bit more on, how he can try and support me through those practices and qualifyings with his feedback."
Track action at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 commences on Friday November 14. Tickets are on sale now,
