Chaz Mostert went viral over Bathurst 1000 beer moment
Mostert retired from Sunday's race, drank a beer and posed for selfies
WAU suffered double disaster with late heartbreak for Ryan Wood
He may have suffered the first Bathurst 1000 DNF of his career, but Chaz Mostert was in fine form afterwards.
Mostert pulled over at The Chase, triggering a Safety Car, with the 33-year-old getting out of his car as officials retrieved the stricken Mustang.
In a moment that quickly went viral, Mostert walked onto a private property near The Chase, was handed a beer, and saluted the crowd before he took a swig and posed for selfies.
Mostert was greeted by Shane ‘Robbo’ Robinson, a well-known landowner on Conrod Straight.
“My bet was how long before he gets a beer. How long was that? That was Winx odds to get on that one then,” Mark Skaife laughed in commentary.
“Standing ovation for Chaz Mostert drinking a beer at Bathurst,” Neil Crompton added.
Watching on, WAU boss Ryan Walkinshaw said: “Obviously not the way we wanted the day to end.
“Chaz is on the Mountain having a beer with the fans – probably the happiest he’s been all weekend. Not sure we’re going back able to get him back before the end of the race – he looks pretty set up here.”
It ended what had been a rotten week for Mostert, who aside from pacing Practice 4 and finishing third in Saturday’s Top Ten Shootout, crashed out of Thursday practice and was involved in a wild moment and pit lane confrontation on Saturday.
After getting back to the garage to watch the rest of the race, Mostert threw down cheeky yet instantly memorable posts on social media.
“Gutted, but I’m not thirsty anymore,” Mostert posted to X, complete with a beer emoji. On Facebook, he then posted: "Who has pics or videos of me at robbo's?"
He then reshared a Facebook page, which photoshopped a Great Northern beer onto an image of Mostert, writing: "Great Northern Brewing Co. give me a call."
WAU’s day looked to set improve dramatically as Ryan Wood challenged for victory late on, only for more heartbreak to flatten the team.
“It’s one of those places that can give you everything or take it all away in an instant, and unfortunately, this year it just didn’t go our way,” Mostert wrote in his post-event blog.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have victories here in the past, but Bathurst didn’t choose me this year, so I thought I’d have a beer with it and hopefully it’s a little nicer to me next year.
“I’m absolutely gutted for the team. We really tuned our cars up from where we rolled out this weekend, and everyone played their part and did an incredible job.
“The effort, commitment, and passion from the Mobil 1 Optus Racing crew never wavers, and I’m so disappointed we couldn’t get the result they deserved today.
“That’s racing though, the highs and lows are what make this sport what it is. We’ll regroup, learn what we can, and come back even stronger on the Gold Coast.
“I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel and give it another crack.”
Mostert is sixth seed for the Elimination Final at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 on October 24-26.
