Chaz Mostert became viral sensation with Bathurst antics
Mostert drank a beer with fans after his WAU Ford stopped
WAU star received photos, videos of now famous moment
It wasn’t his day on the Mountain, but Chaz Mostert made sure to make many new fans — and now, fans have given back.
Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert went viral when he drank beers and took selfies with fans at The Chase after his car failed.
Mostert made sure the pain of his first ever Bathurst 1000 DNF was short-lived, making the trek to a private property of Shane ‘Robbo’ Robinson, a well-known landowner on Conrod Straight.
With a wave to the crowd and a swig of a beer, Mostert captured the imagination of Australia and the world.
The moment brought smiles and laughs to his WAU garage, Mostert having signalled over team radio that he was looking to have a beer as his Ford gave up the ghost.
After initially poking fun at the moment, Mostert took to social media to ask fans for photos — and they delivered.
On Thursday night, Mostert shared a number of fan-captured videos, posting: "Thanks to all the legends that sent me videos from Bathurst, not a great result but got to say bloody love our sport and the fans."
Posting some photos, Mostert added: "Made some new mates at Robbos.”
On the Instagram post, David Reynolds commented: "F**k that was the coolest thing."
It didn’t pay off with a sponsorship from Great Northern, though — below the initial Facebook post sharing, Mostert commented: "Thanks everyone for the tags but no luck with the black fish…”
The moment was unpacked in the Bathurst winners Drivers Only special, with Mostert’s 2021 race-winning co-driver Lee Holdsworth — who finished second with Reynolds on Sunday — a big fan.
“He sent me a message yesterday, he said 'well done'. And I said, 'mate, that was awesome what you did’,” Holdsworth laughed.
"I said, 'it's funny, like big coincidence that you stopped outside Robbo’'s. He said, 'I would've skull-dragged the thing back there just to pull up there so I could have a beer'.”
Reynolds added: "One of those Bathurst things that will last forever."
Mostert's Finals campaign commences at next weekend's Gold Coast round. Tickets are on sale now.
