  • Cam Waters became 20th driver in V8 era to sweep a round

  • Tickford Racing driver won all three Sydney races from pole position

  • Jamie Whincup claimed 11 clean sweeps between 2008 and 2012

A dominant run at last weekend's Thrifty Sydney 500 - Opening Round has put Cam Waters in elite company, with the Tickford Racing driver the latest to pull off a rare 'clean sweep'.

What is a clean sweep in Supercars? Simply, it's when a driver wins all races on offer at a multi-race weekend.

The Monster Energy Ford crushed the field by 17 seconds in Race 1 in Sydney, before he outlasted both Triple Eight Race Engineering drivers to win Race 2 by just 0.03s. Then, he survived late rain to win Race 3.

Waters' Sydney sweep was the 70th across 20 different drivers since the V8 Supercar era began in 1997.

To no surprise, Supercars Hall of Famer Jamie Whincup leads the way with a record 11 sweeps, six coming across his 2008 and 2008 title-winning seasons.

Whincup also kicked off 2010 with sweeps at Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, before Garth Tander (Adelaide), Whincup (Hamilton) and James Courtney (Ipswich and Winton) helped the year open with a stunning six sweeps.

Three-time champions Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen reeled off nine sweeps each. Eight of McLaughlin's sweeps came between 2017 and 2020 in DJR Team Penske colours, four in his record-breaking 18-win season in 2019.

Van Gisbergen claimed all nine streaks with Triple Eight, reeling off three in 2021 and four in 2022, having claimed his first two sweeps at the 2017 and 2018 Adelaide 500.

Behind them, Craig Lowndes nailed eight sweeps between 1998 and 2012, and 11 in total. Three came in his remarkable rookie season in 1996, and four of his 11 came in Perth, where he won a staggering 16 races.

Mark Skaife (six), Marcos Ambrose and Tander (five apiece) enjoyed dominant runs, with Hall of Famer Skaife also recording six sweeps between 1992 and 1994 to hold the outright record with 12.

Waters follows Chaz Mostert (Sydney 2024), Broc Feeney (Darwin 2024) and Brodie Kostecki (2023) as drivers to record sweeps in recent years. The Tickford driver also became the first driver since van Gisbergen in 2021 to sweep an opening round.

Waters will carry a 60-point lead over Will Brown to the Melbourne SuperSprint, which will feature at the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 on March 13-16.
