Broc Feeney pieced together hairy Shootout lap to qualify fifth
Runaway 2025 Boost Mobile Pole Award winner was 0.5s off pole
Feeney the lead Chevrolet in Ford-dominated Top Ten Shootout
The clear benchmark of Boost Mobile Qualifying in 2025, Broc Feeney admitted he simply didn’t do a good enough job on Saturday.
The championship leader was 0.06s shy of Brodie Kostecki in Boost Mobile Qualifying on Friday, and was a favourite for pole.
Come Saturday afternoon, and Feeney put together a scratchy lap to end up fifth and first Chevrolet home, with Ford locking out the top four.
The #88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet paced Practice 3 and Practice 6, the latter coming before the Shootout.
However, he was over half a second down on the dominant Kostecki, with Feeney’s streak of five straight poles coming to an end.
"That Shootout, it wasn't my best lap. That's it, to be honest I didn't do my best lap there,” Feeney said.
It ensures he and co-driver Jamie Whincup's Camaro will start from fifth, with rain threatening to add spice to Sunday’s 161-lap classic.
"The race, looks like it's going to rain at some point, so we're still working on scenarios and final touches on the race car I think,” Feeney added.
"We've worked on it a lot this week, and I just feel like we've been missing a little bit of something, somewhere.
"We've got a couple of changes we'll try, we're pretty confident in that process and it should help us find what we're looking for and looking to take to track some Sunday."
Whincup’s day featured a spin into the Hell Corner sand, with a red flag breach earning the Hall of Fame a reprimand.
"Both of us aren't that happy. So we've got to work out what we think we can do and try a few things in the Warm Up,” Whincup said.
"The main focus of the day was that dual set up. We can't neglect the Shootout, but we wanted to work on the race car. So we tried and got after it but we're not as happy as we would like to be, to be honest. I think we'll keep it at small steps.
"The thing is though, we all have in the back of our mind that any set up done now might be all somewhat irrelevant because I'm pretty sure that the end of the race is going to be wet. So it's tricky, too tricky to decide what to do.
"We'll use the time we've got available on Sunday morning to do what we can. We'll make the call at the last minute when we get the best idea of the weather.
“It was not that bad at the start of the week... but it was real bad yesterday and now it's starting to slightly get better. So we might wake up in the morning and change again until we'll see."
Supercars return to the track on Sunday morning for the 20-minute Warm Up at 8:30am AEDT, before the race gets underway at 11:45am.
