Broc Feeney determined to push past Enduro Cup wobbles
Feeney missed opportunity to win more bonus points with enduro slump
#88 finished 19th at The Bend, sixth in Bathurst
The Ryco Enduro Cup did not pan out the way Broc Feeney would've wanted it to.
His Repco Sprint Cup win was nothing short of extraordinary, winning 14 of the 24 completed races, romping home with a 345-point advantage over his nearest rival Matt Payne.
However, refuelling dramas at The Bend, and an uncharacteristic mistake at Bathurst have come as something of a reality check for the 23-year-old entering his home event.
He still claimed the top Finals seeding, and with his 25 bonus points has a comfortable 136-point gap over the reset cut-off line between Anton De Pasquale in seventh and Thomas Randle in eighth.
However, he knows that the stakes are only going to keep increasing across the three Finals events at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, Penrite Oil Sandown 500, and the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Just one hiccup could completely derail what has to this point been Feeney's best season yet in Supercars, something the Gold Coast local is only all too aware of.
"Looking at the points, I’m glad I’ve got the bonus points [from the Sprint Cup],” Feeney said.
“But it’s still going to be high stakes all weekend - it’s all to play for. Everyone’s going to have to get really good results to make sure you’re in a good position to get through to Sandown.
"So, for me, nothing really changes from the sprint rounds. It’s all about going to the Gold Coast and trying to win a race and automatically get through to the next round.”
Further adding to the Finals drama is that any of the 10 drivers in Finals contention who manage to win a race in Surfers Paradise will secure automatic entry to the Semi Final in Sandown, regardless of their points haul at the end of the event.
Feeney is yet to climb to the top step at his home event, and only secured his first-ever surfboards last year with a pair of third place finishes.
The championship leader is eager to change that this weekend, with a change in fortunes needed after his difficult run over the past two races. "I feel like our car’s going to suit a track like this. We were pretty strong there last year with a couple of thirds, and we’ve obviously had a lot of good car speed lately,” Feeney said.
"It’s been a shame that we haven’t been able to get any results for the last couple of rounds, but I also feel like we’ve certainly shown that we’ve still got a lot of race and qualifying pace as well.
"Hopefully, we can have a clean weekend and get back into a rhythm and get a bit of momentum on our side heading into this Finals Series."
Feeney enters The Finals 30 points clear of Payne, who claimed the Enduro Cup bonus points, and 79 points clear of teammate Will Brown in third.
On-track action at Surfers Paradise will begin on Friday. Tickets for the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 are on sale now.
