Dick Johnson Racing veteran to start from the rear of the grid having started from pole last time out in Sydney

Will Davison has been left bemused after qualifying last for this afternoon’s first race in Symmons Plains in the first segment of Boost Mobile Qualifying.

With regular engineer Richard Harris absent this weekend, Davison has rookie engineer Caleb Mustaerts on the headset, however they have struggled for pace all weekend.

Davison’s lack of pace has come as a shock, after the Dick Johnson Racing veteran claimed his first pole since 2022 for the last race in Sydney.

Speaking post-session, Davison was yet to fully digest how his session was so different from his Sunday qualifying in Sydney.

“I don’t have any thoughts yet, but obviously it didn’t go well,” said a despondent Davison.

“We struggled yesterday unfortunately, we needed that wet practice this morning.”

Having not been able to put a finger on why the #17 Shell V-Power Mustang has not been able to carry its Sydney pace into this weekend, there was a drastic change made for qualifying.

However, that change only seemed to further amplify the lack of pace for Davison, who will line up alongside fellow shock Q1 exit Matt Payne on the back row.

“We’re simply just out of the window, we tried something with our brakes then which was quite different. I just locked up every run, just completely destroyed a left front.”

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Dick Johnson Racing, with Anton De Pasquale continuing his solid qualifying form to qualify eighth for this afternoon’s opening sprint race.

Race 17 of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will begin at 4:10pm AEST at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.
