Drivers critical of bizarre qualifying incident in at Queensland Raceway
Several cars bunch together in dramatic end to first part of Race 23 qualifying
Broc Feeney claims pole after incident, which Cam Waters labelled "bit of a laugh"
Current and former drivers have raised eyebrows at the bizarre end to Q1 in the opening Boost Mobile Qualifying session at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440.
With the clock ticking down in the first part of Race 23 qualifying, the majority of the field fought for track position to get two push laps.
Instead, several cars came into close proximity on the run to Turn 3, with Cam Waters making contact with Kai Allen as David Reynolds rounded up both Fords.
The wild scenes set up a strange end to the session, with Waters and Matt Payne among the big names to miss out on a Q2 berth.
"It was a bit of a laugh on that out lap, everyone trying to get to the front of the pack so they can get two laps," said Waters.
James Courtney, who will start his 600th race from 12th, added: "The guys at the front have got plenty of time to get their time in, so they were going slow, making it hard for everyone at the back.
"It's a bit of a pain, but that's the drama with being at this end of pit lane."
In commentary, Neil Crompton labelled the fiasco as a "car park Grand Prix," with former champions Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander also left in bemusement.
"With the traffic, you've got the front car who is at the end of pit lane, they earn that right leading the championship," Winterbottom said.
"He's got no concern in the world with two minutes to go... [the others] want to do two laps. For them, there's desperation to get tyre temp. You've got relaxed up the front and super determined to get through at the back, and it's created this.
"I've never seen this before in the 21 years I've raced."
Tander pointed the finger at teams for leaving pit lane too late, with Erebus Motorsport's decision to take Jack Le Brocq out of sequence undone by the traffic.
"I've not seen it that bad before. Effectively, they all left pit lane too late," Tander said.
"The second half of pit lane worked out, we don't have enough time to get around for the second lap, so we've got to push now.
"Jack Le Brocq went super early, he was on a massive push lap coming through Turns 1 and 2, and saw the Supercars car park making their way down to Turn 3 and had to abort.
"There was a whole heap going on in the last two minutes of that session."
