Raise the bat: Symmons Plains closes on special milestone

Next weekend's NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint will edge Symmons Plains closer to an incredible milestone.

The rural Launceston venue will host the second round of the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship on March 26-27.

It will be the 49th ATCC/Supercars event at the 2.41km circuit, bringing it ever closer to the magical 50.

Only Sandown Motor Raceway, with 51 rounds, has hosted more championship events.

Perth’s Wanneroo Raceway (42) and Winton Motor Raceway (32) are the only other 2022 circuits to have hosted more than 30 events.

Next weekend's event marks the 53rd anniversary of ATCC/Supercars competition at Symmons Plains.

The popular Tasmanian venue made its championship debut in 1969, with Norm Beechey racing a Holden Monaro GTS 327 to victory.

In 48 previous visits, 30 drivers have won races, with Jamie Whincup leading the way with 13 wins.

Chaz Mostert, the current points leader, won his first race at Symmons Plains last April.

Whincup and reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen shared the other two wins at the 2021 event.

With Whincup retiring at the end of 2021, there are now just four active drivers who have won races at Symmons Plains.

Van Gisbergen leads the way on four, ahead of Will Davison (two), Mark Winterbottom and Mostert (both one).
