James Golding has recounted his role in one of the wildest incidents this season, labelling his Townsville crash as “pretty scary.”
The PremiAir Racing driver was consigned to his first DNF in three years after a dramatic crash in the second leg of the NTI Townsville 500.
Golding, who started down the back, careened into Thomas Randle and caught air, before hitting the concrete wall and catchfence roof-first.
The #31 PremiAir Chevrolet was out on the spot, with Golding walking away from the crash that also rubbed Randle and Jaxon Evans out of contention.
Randle managed to finish the race despite nursing damage to to the rear of his car, with Golding’s car also cracking the driver’s side window on the #55 Castrol Ford.
Speaking at the time, Randle said: "I saw his diffuser and his rear wheel land... there's a tyre mark on the windscreen.
"Yeah, it was pretty scary, but I'm glad we're both okay... it broke the front left damper, but the fact that we'd finished, albeit five laps down with the way the car is, I'm just real sorry for the whole crew."
Obviously, Golding came off worst of all, with freshly released judicial vision detailing just how brutal the 29-year-old’s impact was.
It was a point rammed home during the live broadcast, with commentators Mark Skaife and Neil Crompton both shocked after seeing new angles of the incident.
When quizzed about the crash on the latest Drivers Only episode, Golding said: “I haven’t experienced that before.
“[Cam] Waters instigated the whole thing, he ended up spinning around, and there was shit going everywhere. “Unfortunately I slipped Tommy and got airborne, hit the fence on the roof, which is pretty scary.
“Tom’s just slammed the brakes and gone hard right to avoid Cameron, and I’ve just launched up the back of him, I was right on his right rear.”
Golding is now 16th and 166 points behind 10th. Just three rounds ago, he was 11th, but only 15 points from the 10.
The new Drivers Only episode will be released Friday July 25 via Supercars’ channels and the Listnr platform.
The 2025 Supercars season resumes at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440. Supercars drivers will contest three races at the August 8-10 event. Tickets are on sale now. International viewers can watch the action on SuperView.
