  • 2023 event attracted nearly 70,000 fans

The Penrite Oil Sandown 500 will have a new date in 2024, with this year's 60th anniversary event brought forward a week.

This year's Penrite Oil Sandown 500 will be held on September 13-15, four weeks after the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint on August 16-18, and four weeks before the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 10-13.

The revised date comes after discussions between the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) and Supercars, with the new date providing the "greatest opportunity" to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the special race, which made a triumphant return in 2023.

The new date also ensures no clashes with the showpiece Sunday race and AFL Finals matches, which will be held on Friday night and Saturday night.

The 2023 event, the first Sandown 500 since 2019, attracted a major crowd of 68,724 across the three days to the iconic Melbourne venue.

"The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) has recently advised Supercars that Sandown cannot meet the operational needs of a Supercars event at the date originally announced as part of the 2024 calendar," a Supercars statement reads.

"Supercars while working with the MRC have agreed to bring the 60th celebrations of the Sandown 500 forward a week to September 13-15.

"The date change provides the greatest opportunity for Supercars to deliver the best possible event that showcases the rich history of the Sandown 500."

First opened in 1962, Sandown hosted a six-hour touring car race in 1964, and this year celebrates both its 60th anniversary and its 50th running.
