V8 Supercars fans will know before the end of this season what specification engines will run alongside the V8s and which body styles may be able to compete in the Championship from 2017.

They will also find out whether different power plants will join the V8 from the start of 2017.

A white paper proposing future vehicle rules for the category from 2017 was signed off by V8 Supercars team owners at their annual general meeting on the Gold Coast on Thursday.

They also were briefed on a proposed re-branding that will be launched from January 1, 2015.

It is known that engine rules and body styles have been a central part of the white paper, which is designed to take Australia's premier motor racing category to the next era once Holden and Ford cease local manufacturing and replace the Commodore and Falcon with imports.

"We presented the recommendations and the branding," confirmed V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton.

"It was a really good discussion with lots of healthy debate.

"There was universal support in terms of direction. Clearly from here there are a lot of technical aspects to be investigated. We will regroup and hope to make the announcement no later than the Sydney NRMA 500."

Once agreed, the category will spend the coming months refining the technical rules for the scheduled 2017 debut. Teams will then be able to begin testing potential future engines and makes.
