Brown ecstatic after first career podium

Will Brown says tyre wear ultimately prevented him from launching an attack on Anton De Pasquale late in Race 22.

Brown cut into De Pasquale’s 10-second lead late into the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight finale and loomed a chance at a maiden victory.

De Pasquale had saved enough of his own tyre to hold the Erebus Motorsport rookie at bay to claim his second win in as many days.

Regardless, Brown gave it his all with a first career win on the line in just his 32nd main game start.

On his first full lap on his four tyres, Brown dropped in a 1:31.188s lap.

He reeled off eight more laps in the 1:31s bracket as he cut into the margin to De Pasquale, who was hovering in the 1:32s.

Once Brown got to the rear of the #11 Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang, he had little left to fight - but was happy to be in the fight regardless.

“It was pretty cool,” said Brown, who went into battle with his former Erebus co-driver.

"I was probably driving a bit hard, they told me to drive to a number and typical young bloke, I couldn't do that.

“I just kept going flat out.. I ran out of puff and gave him a few taps at the last corner.

“I pretty much just overheated them by the time I got there, but I had a crack and had I a lot of fun.”

Brown’s first podium was perhaps a day late, with the 23-year-old losing out on Saturday night following a botched pit stop.

It came after Brown forced De Pasquale’s hand in a thrilling start to the night race.

Erebus still had reason to smile on Saturday, with Brodie Kostecki finishing third behind De Pasquale and Shane van Gisbergen.

Brown moved up to ninth in the championship with finishes of fifth, 11th, and second.

The key for Erebus, according to Brown, was retaining the speed shown on Saturday.

"A few times we've had pace but it fell away overnight,” he said.

“It was fantastic to back it up today and show the pace.

"I'm pretty glad we have four weekends in a row now."

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will resume this weekend at the ARMOR ALL Sydney SuperNight.

Tickets for the three upcoming Sydney events are on sale now.
