Champion-elect van Gisbergen sheds light on future

Shane van Gisbergen has revealed talks of a new deal, which will be influenced by Gen3.

Van Gisbergen clinched the 2022 title with victory on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Kiwi now has three titles in seven seasons with Red Bull Ampol Racing.

The Gold Coast event is van Gisbergen’s 23rd race weekend commitment in 35 weeks since the March Sydney opener.

In that time, he has competed in rallying and GT racing, and even made a Le Mans debut in June.

He recently revealed talks for a NASCAR cameo with Trackhouse Racing.

Shortly after sealing his third title, van Gisbergen reiterated that he expects to remain in Supercars full-time.

He wants to stay with Triple Eight, where he has won 63 races in 204 starts.

However, he claimed it hinges on Gen3, with the new cars to debut in 2023.

"[My Supercars future] depends on Gen3, probably,” he said.

"I would like to say here. If I stay in Supercars, I'll definitely stay with Triple Eight.

"I love the team. And we have started talking about a new deal.

"But maybe I'd like to start next year and see what the racing is like.

"The [Gen3] car has potential… hopefully next year it's a better race car.

"I'd love to stay in Supercars, it's close to home.”

Van Gisbergen will trade a Commodore for a Camaro next year, which is his last on his current Triple Eight deal.

The 33-year-old is one of several veterans who raced low downforce cars in previous years.

The Kiwi will bring up 500 race starts in 2023, which will be his 16th full season in Supercars.

On Gen3, he said: "I just want it to be fun. And a good car to drive.

"I just hope it is a good race car, a fun race car, for everyone.

"And we still have some room to develop it and change it around.

"Everything they say about it is good, they are talking it up, all the engineers. And I trust them.

"But we'll see at the first race what it is really like.”

Cars will hit the track on Sunday for ARMOR ALL Qualifying, a Top Ten Shootout and Race 32.
