A barely-believable stroke of poor luck has ruined a promising Townsville drive for Cameron Hill, who dropped out of the championship top 10.

Running 10th in Sunday's race, which was won by points leader Broc Feeney, Hill's race unravelled due to a shock brake issue.

Hill's Matt Stone Racing Chevrolet was forced into the garage for running repairs, with attention centred on the front left corner of the car.

The Canberran returned to the race, albeit 10 laps down, and finished 24th and last.

Crucially, Hill dropped to 11th in the championship standings, the 29-year-old falling out of the top 10 for the first time since Melbourne in March.

During the race, MSR posted an image to its social channels of a bolt wedged in a brake pad taken from Hill's car, captioned: "A brake pad explosion due to debris has un-done Cam's race."

Starting 12th, Hill was trailing Brodie Kostecki on lap 38 when the issue reared its head, with Hill short-cutting the Turn 7/8 chicane complex run-off.

While the incident was a tough pill to swallow at MSR, Hill is still only 53 points behind new 10th placed driver Ryan Wood, with Andre Heimgartner just 90 points up the road in ninth.

"You win some and lose some, and this weekend we certainly didn't win any," Stone said on the broadcast.

"Unfortunately for Cam, he picked up a bit of debris and exploded some brake components, which is not ideal.

"It looks like a little bolt, but it's come through on the inside, and made a bit of a mess, gone out the top and taken everything with it.

"It's a testament to the strength of the little bolt, it's not one off the car."

Supercars returns to Queensland Raceway on August 8-10 to round out the Repco Sprint Cup at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440. Tickets are on sale now.
