‘Absolutely gutted’: Tickford teammates clash
Cameron Waters was left ‘absolutely gutted’ after a clash with Tickford teammate Chaz Mostert ended his hopes of a Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 podium.
Waters and Mostert were running third and fourth on the road on lap 123 when the Supercheap Mustang attempted a pass on the Monster entry on the outside into the Chase.
The two cars made contact and were both sent spinning into the sand trap; Waters escaping and Mostert left stranded.
After returning to the garage with damage, Waters told the television broadcast: “I’m just absolutely gutted. No words really, it’s just disappointing.
“We were trucking along for a podium, we were fuel saving and Chazzy was obviously trying to race me to pass me, he was meant to be fuel saving and I don’t know, he’s just made a mistake.
“I don’t know what to say, the car was fast, we should have been on the podium.”
It is the third year in a row where Mostert has effectively taken the Monster entry out of the Great Race, while they also clashed last time out at Pukekohe.
Asked what he’ll say to Mostert about the incident, Waters said: “It’s a common occurrence between us.
"It’s just shit, it’s shit for the team. They put in so many hours and deserve so much better than that.
“We should have been up there with one car, maybe two on the podium today and we’ve ended up both in the dirt.”
Mostert returned to the track and served a drive-through penalty for the incident and is now off the lead lap.
The Mostert/James Moffat and Waters/Michael Caruso entries had started second and third and were in contention throughout the race until their incident.
